Our environment - tell us what you think

Welcome to the Earth Chattering discussion forum, tell us what you are up to.

We want to provide you with the opportunity to talk about water quality in catchments throughout the South West.  We will be sharing our knowlede of rivers on this discussion forum, which you can join in with and share your local understanding, or maybe even start your own discussion about an area.

This discussion forum is intended to facilitate a network of likeminded individuals and organisations who might want to work together to play a part in improving their local environment.   We would like you to use this to post comments on the environmental issues that matter to you.

These are your rivers. Join our discussion about water quality and tell us what you think.

Barnstaple Yeo (0 Replies)

The Yeo (Barnstaple) currently river does not meet the standards to be classified as being at ‘good’ ecological status. Below are what the Environment Agency believes to be the reasons. Nutrients • There are increased phosphate levels in the upper reaches and they have an adverse effect on river life downstream. We think there are two potential sources: point sources, such as water company and private sewage treatment works; diffuse sources, such as runoff from agricultural land and roads. Fish When we surveyed the river there were fewer minnow than expected, and stoneloach were absent. Flow River flows in the Yeo may not be enough to support the natural ecology of the river all year. We think this may be because of water being removed at various abstraction points along the river. Do you agree with the Environment Agency, do you have any information which may suggest otherwise?
