The role of allotments in Localism (0 Replies)

The Local government Association have been asked to compile a list of all the statutory duties on local government - http://www.communities.gov.uk/news/newsroom/1859816 which will include Local authorities obligation to provide allotments. The Planning Minister Greg Clark (9th May 2011) has said that the new community powers should allow for the creation of more allotments through the new neighbourhood plans being introduced in the Localism Bill. More and more people want to grow their own vegetables but sites are becoming increasingly difficult to come by. Mr Clark said, 'People who get behind neighbourhood planning and develop a plan have real powers to not only protect existing sites but create more plots for the whole community to enjoy'. Busy, occupied allotments provide a wealth of wider co-operative and health-giving public benefits as well as the obvious fruit & veg, chickens, eggs, honey & even electricity where a turbine is installed.
